Your breath has the power to influence how you feel, think and function. Different breathing techniques can have a profound effect on the body and mind, helping to reduce stress and anxiety, support healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular function, improve sleep, increase energy when you are feeling flat and bring greater balance to your mental, emotional and physical state.
The Power of Breath is a 4 week introduction to the ancient yogic science of breath, known as Pranayama. Through a combination of theory and guided practice, you will learn how conscious breathing can be used as a practical tool to support your health and wellbeing.
In 90 minute sessions spread over four weeks, we will explore both the theory and practice of pranayama, including:
The history and development of pranayama
The anatomy and mechanics of breathing
The yogic understanding of breath and the energetic body, including vayus, nadis, koshas and bandhas
A range of major pranayama techniques and how they can be used to energise, calm, balance and regulate the body and mind
What are the benefits of pranayama?
Pranayama involves techniques for expanding, regulating and directing the breath. Different practices can be used to create different effects, from calming the nervous system and preparing the body for rest, to increasing energy, improving focus and supporting emotional balance.
With regular practice, pranayama may help to:
Reduce stress and anxiety
Support healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular health
Improve sleep and relaxation
Increase energy and vitality
Enhance mental clarity and focus
Support emotional regulation
Improve awareness and connection between the mind and body
Support respiratory health and breathing efficiency
