Preparing for Labour

Written by Liah Tsotros - Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner

As you approach the final weeks of pregnancy, it’s natural to start thinking about labour and how it will unfold, how your body will cope, and what you can do to prepare. Labour preparation acupuncture focuses on supporting your body in the lead-up to birth, encouraging physiological readiness rather than forcing anything before it’s time.

When does labour preparation acupuncture start?
Labour preparation treatments typically begin around 36 weeks. From this point, sessions are usually done weekly until birth. The aim is to gently support your body as it moves toward labour.

What does it help with?
Labour preparation acupuncture is commonly used to:

  • Encourage cervical ripening

  • Support optimal baby positioning

  • Promote efficient uterine activity

  • Reduce muscular tension, especially in the pelvis and lower back

  • Calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety around birth

  • Support stamina and energy for labour

Rather than trying to “induce” labour, the goal is to create the conditions that allow labour to begin naturally when your body and baby are ready.

How does it work?
Acupuncture during this stage focuses on points that:

  • Help the body soften and prepare

  • Encourage downward movement

  • Support circulation to the uterus and pelvis

  • Promote relaxation and nervous system regulation

When the body is relaxed and supported, it can respond more effectively during labour.

What are the potential benefits?
Some women choose labour preparation acupuncture to:

  • Reduce the likelihood of going significantly overdue

  • Support a shorter labour

  • Encourage more coordinated contractions

  • Reduce the need for medical intervention

  • Feel calmer and more prepared going into birth

Every labour is different, but many people find that regular treatments help them feel more grounded and confident as the due date approaches.

Is it safe?
When performed by a qualified practitioner experienced in pregnancy care, labour preparation acupuncture is considered safe. Treatments are gentle and tailored to each individual and stage of pregnancy.

What to expect in a session
Sessions are typically relaxing. Fine needles are placed in carefully selected points, and you’ll rest comfortably for around 20–30 minutes. Many people leave feeling calmer, looser through the hips and lower back, and more connected to their body.

Preparing for birth
Labour preparation acupuncture is just one piece of the puzzle. It works best alongside:

  • Gentle movement

  • Rest and hydration

  • Nourishing food

  • Breathing and relaxation practices

  • Supportive birth education

Together, these approaches help your body do what it is designed to do.

If you’re approaching the final weeks of pregnancy and would like support preparing for labour, acupuncture offers a gentle, supportive option to help you feel ready, physically and mentally, for birth.
