Yoni Massage: What It Is, How It Helps & What to Expect
What is yoni massage?
Yoni is a Sanskrit word meaning “source of all life”, referring to the entire female reproductive system — the vulva, vagina, clitoris, cervix, womb, tubes, ovaries.
Yoni massage is a sacred practice with ancient roots in India and China. It’s a form of intentional, therapeutic touch designed to support women in releasing stored emotion, trauma, numbness or tension in the pelvic space. It also is a really powerful way to reconnect to your pleasure, power, and feminine energy.
This practice isn’t goal-driven or sexual in the way we’ve been conditioned to think. It’s a gentle, healing space to receive, to feel, and to be fully honoured in your body.
Different practitioners work in different ways – some are purely therapeutic, others can be more erotic and pleasure focused. As I practice therapeutically, this is what this blog will focus on.
What are the benefits of yoni massage?
Yoni massage can be deeply transformative across all layers of your being — physical, emotional, sexual, and spiritual.
Common benefits include:
Releasing pelvic tension, numbness or pain
Restoring sensitivity and increasing blood flow
Processing and releasing trauma or past sexual experiences
Reconnecting with your body, sensuality and power
Releasing shame and softening into trust and safety in your body
Rebuilding confidence around touch and pleasure
Relieving stress and blocked emotion held in the yoni
Heal your ancestral and familial line
Supportive for preconception and postnatal (including birth trauma)
For many women, it’s a sacred experience of coming home to themselves, their body, aliveness, and power.
Women literally leave a lighter, more radiant and glowing version of themselves.
Is yoni massage safe?
Yes — when done in a professional setting, with respect, consent, and clear communication — yoni massage is not only safe, but incredibly healing.
In all my sessions, your boundaries come first. Nothing happens without your full-body, verbal “yes.” I guide everything slowly and clearly, and your body leads the way. You are in charge at all times.
If you’ve experienced trauma, numbness, pain, tension, shame or disconnect in your pelvic space, this work can be incredibly supportive — but it’s always your choice when, how, and if to explore it. It’s important to move at your own pace, with someone who is trauma-informed and attuned to your needs.
One important thing to note: some people offer yoni massage services without any formal training. In this case, it can indeed be unsafe and even retraumatising. When searching for a practitioner, always ask are they certified, and where did they train.
I am certified in Therapeutic Yoni Massage, and trained with Kristin Murray from Somatic Sex School Yonilicious, and am accredited with International Institute for Complimentary Therapies.
What happens in a yoni massage session?
Every session is different and tailored to you. But here’s a general flow of how we journey together:
We begin with grounding, meditation and conversation
We chat about your intentions, boundaries, and any concerns or fears
I explain the session step-by-step, so you know exactly what to expect
You receive a full body massage to relax the nervous system
Only once/if you’re ready, we move into the yoni massage — slowly, consciously, with ongoing consent
I guide and support you through whatever arises — numbness, pain, emotion, pleasure, release
We close with tea, integration, and a personalised follow-up email with notes and your specific integration practices
